The Seventh Bayesian, Fiducial and Frequentist conference (BFF7) will be held on October 26 – 28, 2020, at the University of Toronto, Canada. The focus of this year’s conference is on the Methodological, Computational, and Ethical Principles for Data Science.
The BFF7 conference aims to bring together experts who are committed to the development of bridges between the three major approaches towards statistical inference, namely Bayesian, Fiducial and Frequentist, with the aim of developing a firm foundation for the challenges of statistical inference in our data centric world. The conference is dedicated to the 95th birthday of Professor Donald A. S. Fraser. Don is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto, widely recognized as a pioneer of Foundational Statistics.
Statistics is a young discipline with several different and competing paths in its approaches and foundations. The question of which methodology is best suited for inference is as hotly contested today as it has been for almost the entire history of Statistics. A new level of complexity arises when due attention is paid to the philosophical issues concerning the BFF foundations, including a divided pool of opinions concerning the interpretations of probability, as well as how statistics relates to the broader question of epistemology of theory confirmation. Advances have been made in philosophy in reconciling interpretational perspectives to fine-tune our understandings of different aspects of uncertainties and evidential support, as well as the logics of different statistical inference procedures in satisfying the norms of theory choice such as simplicity, naturalness, robustness, and truth-conduciveness. In addition, the successful implementation of the BFF principles requires new approaches to computation. The sharp increase in data volume and level of model complexity posit new challenges to applying current approaches to developments of Bayesian and Fiducial methods.
More details on BFF7 will be announced here as they become available. We look forward to seeing you in Toronto!
